International Day of Peace > Great Success!!

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

The first International Day of Peace charity dinner held at Monk Bodhi Dharma was a huge success with everyone walking away satisfied and happy! The night raised $1716.95 which consisted of all the takings from the dinner, sales of cupcakes, all the staff’s tips from the breakfast and lunch service, donations on the night and a generous donation from Nostralis Wholemeal Vegetarian Pizza. The funds will be split between the Aboriginal Benefits Foundation (Helping Aboriginal Communities) and ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons). We know the actual dollar amount in the grand scheme of things is not a lot but the energy from the 32 people that attended was full of love, hope and peace!

What is International Day of Peace?

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind.

Our version of a chai wallah

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Chai can be such a wonderful and nurturing drink (especially in winter). When we opened, we didn’t serve any chai as we weren’t happy with what was commercially available out there. Our solution was to experiment and try to produce the best chai recipe that would suit us and our clientele.

We sought some advice from tea guru Nathan Wakeford from Somage and Kate and Nath came up with our own Monk Bodhi Dharma chai recipe. Even though we are all multi-tasking creatures at Monk, during busy times, one of our duties is to be chai wallahs (a wallah is one who performs a specific task). We brew our chai for 4 minutes (30grams) and then steam it with the customer’s choice of milk. We then sieve it in a Japanese handmade chai pot and serve it in custom made pottery made by the wonderful Karen Ho. Bliss!
