What is Playing for Change?

Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire, connect and bring peace to the world through music.

Playing For Change Day unites a global community through the power of music to affect positive social change. Communities will gather as musicians from all over the world perform on stages, street corners, schools, yoga studios, and cafes all with the goal of bringing music into the lives of young people.

Monk Bodhi Dharma is thrilled to have Salvador Persico [percussion Blue King Brown] and friends joining us for a little latin groove out front under the tarps.

What is International Day of Peace?

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind.

Amazing Fresh Crop Coffees

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

We have been so fortunate to have so many international coffee people come through during MICE and the 2013 World Barista Championships. It has been a great time to talk coffee and to hear what people are doing in their part of the world!

I am so glad to know that we as a coffee city in Melbourne and our coffee roastery are bringing in fresher, higher grade and generally better coffee than ever. What it comes down to at the end of the day is the raw product that we get in :) Coffee will never be as good as what it was when it was inside its coffee cherry. As such, the less we do to it during roasting, brewing, packaging and transportation the better.

Currently we have some amazing Kenyans (Gachami AA and Thithi AA) and Guatemalans including the Small Producers of Atitlan, Entre Volcanes and Las Nubes. The El Salvadorian coffees are tasting awesome too including the El Carmen, San Cayetano and El Timbo.  We also have a lot of lovely Brazils including the Cup of Excellence #9 Serra Dos Crioulos and the sweet Cambara.

see you at the bar

In our menu, you will find entrees like Corn & Tomato Wraps with pesto mayonnaise, veggies, sprouts drizzled with olive oil & Sweet Chilie Love – stuffed sweet chilies with macadamia & sundried tomato served with fresh mango and a cucumber salad & drizzled with chilie oil.

Upgrade to ‘Z Class’ for Peace

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Cause it’s getting squishy squashy at the Monk on our celebratory dinner for International Day of Peace (21 September, 2011), the cookie boy has kindly offered us his wheels pictured below as an alternative eating space that will be parked outside the Monk.

This will particularly appeal to the more casual swinger hipster cool types that are looking for the experience of how this old hippie traveled the 3 K’s (Kuta, Kathmandu. Kabul) in the 60’s. But if you are straight edged and cashed up, that’s cool too!

As this is a once only offering for people looking for a more intimate occasion, it will also come at a premium price of $100 per person. Rest assured that absolutely all the proceeds go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Edgars Mission!

Bookings of 3-4 only on a first come first served basis.

Date and Time: Wednesday 21 September, 2011 at 6pm and 8.30pm

Dinner will be fully vegan and will include the following :

Three [3] dip combo/ Moroccan Pumpkin, Mexican Red Bean and Middle Eastern Hummus served with organic corn chips and raw vegetable crudités
Rasam [soup]
Feast Plate/ Sea Shepherd Pie, Mansoor Dal, Spiced Potatoes, Royal Rice [Sela], Lijjat Pappads, Silverbeet Kitchari and Chile Jam
Raw selection of mignardises including chocolates, cookies, biscotti and macaroons

Monk Bodhi Dharma Breakfast Degustation

Our version of a chai wallah

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Chai can be such a wonderful and nurturing drink (especially in winter). When we opened, we didn’t serve any chai as we weren’t happy with what was commercially available out there. Our solution was to experiment and try to produce the best chai recipe that would suit us and our clientele.

We sought some advice from tea guru Nathan Wakeford from Somage and we came up with our own Monk Bodhi Dharma chai recipe. Even though we are all multi-tasking creatures at Monk, during busy times, one of our duties is to be chai wallahs (a wallah is one who performs a specific task). We brew our chai for 4 minutes (30grams) and then steam it with the customer’s choice of milk. We then sieve it in a Japanese handmade chai pot and serve it in custom made pottery made by the wonderful Karen Ho. Bliss!
